The Tesla Approach to Passenger Rail
Building new high-speed rail infrastructure from scratch in the United States is a notoriously difficult and expensive endeavor, plagued by endless permitting, zoning laws, and multibillion-dollar price tags. Joshua Dominic, Co-founder and CEO of Dreamstar Lines, realized that to bring world-class train travel back to America, they had to work with the infrastructure we already have. By signing agreements to utilize the existing 140,000 miles of track—specifically partnering with Union Pacific—Dreamstar Lines is set to launch a premium overnight sleeper train between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
But getting Americans out of airplanes and cars requires a massive behavioral shift. Taking a page out of Tesla’s playbook, Joshua and his team realized that to change the perception of train travel, they had to start by making it “sexy.” Working with BMW Designworks, they are creating an Art Deco-inspired, premium experience designed for travelers who value their time and comfort.
Through intensive customer discovery, Dreamstar Lines has tailored its offering to solve real traveler pain points. They are introducing private, pet-friendly cabins for animal lovers and an auto-ferry service so passengers can bring their own cars for the last mile—at least until autonomous robotaxi fleets take over our cities.
In this episode, Silas and Joshua dig deep into the realities of building hard tech and physical infrastructure in a highly regulated environment. They discuss the economics of shared corridors with freight rails, why strict zoning laws are hindering the “builder generation,” and why special economic zones might be the key to unlocking America’s next wave of innovation.
